GLOBAL SOUL: WORLD BEATS & TREATS
Hosted by DJ Joe Bryl with Special Weekly Guests
Every Wednesday beginning December 1: 8pm -2am – Free No Cover
960 W. 31st St., Chicago, Il. 60608, 773-890-0588

In November 2010 various heads of state met at the G-20 Seoul Summi to discuss the global financial system and the world economy. However, starting December here in Chicago a select grouping of leading musical hedz are joining forces for a different type of ‘soul summit’ titled “Global Soul: World Beats & Treats”.

Curated and headed by DJ Joe Bryl (prevoius co-owner and musical director of Sonotheque), “Global Soul” will begin it’s new weekly residency every Wednesday starting December 1 at Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar. Encompassing all corners of the world, “Global Soul” will present the rich panolpy of world rhythms, sounds and cultures. Joined by a new DJ each week, Joe Bryl and his guest will take their listeners on an expansive and informative musical journey featuring the best in global grooves, both past and present.

Equally part listening lounge and dance party (depending on the participants personal inclinations), “Global Soul” will be your musical passport to explore the rich and ever-changing diversity of international sounds.

Each participant (see individual listing below) was approached due to their knowledge, insight and passion in the realm of world music. Each guest DJ will have complete creative freedom to explore any avenue or direction of global grooves that fit their fancy.

It is our hopeful goal that this shifting weekly musical marriage will transport the listener into unknown and relatively unexplored areas of world music and culture. We live in extraordinary times in which the vast distances that seemingly divide us are in truth connected by our shared humanity. Through music, “Global Soul” aims to swim these arbitrary gulfs, thus uniting us under one roof and connecting us as one people under a groove.

As an added component to the night’s offering, VJ Merkaba (Eric Gelehrter, http://www.psymbolic.com/artists/merkaba_visualswill create a visual backdrop to the music drawing from rare footage of early recorded musical performances to more recent visual delights. And to further enhance the global experience, Maria’s mixologists will create a group of speciality cocktails from diverse destinations on the globe. Various beers from around the world will also be available.

The Wednesday, December 1 event will also feature a listening party for the Now Again Records releases of “Dark Sunrise – Frank Ililonga & Musi-O-Tunya” and “Those Shocking Shaking Days – Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk: 1970 – 1978“.
